Sludge generation is an important
and crucial issue that needs to be handled specially during the process
of water & wastewater treatment. The inadequate sludge handling
system can create serious environmental implications. As a result of
treatment process, the sludges can be either organic or inorganic. Both
types of sludges needs specific handling before it is fit for disposal
as per client's requirement which sometimes is dictated by the
environmental issues in their respective areas. Before disposing the
organic sludges after dewatering and drying, they may need further
biological treatment. It is required because the organic sludges carry a
large number of bacteria and dead organic matter. Uncontrolled
decomposition of the organic sludges can lead to insanitary conditions
leading to spread of odors and diseases. Therefore proper treatment is
desired prior to disposal for such organic sludge. Inorganic sludges,
emanating from water & wastewater treatment processes, can be
disposed only after proper treatment for all dangerous chemicals which
may pose environmental problems after disposal. It can lead to
groundwater contamination due to leaching into the groundwater sources
especially during wet weather conditions.
