Water Conditioners alter the crystalline behavior of Calcium and Magnesium ions. These ions loose their ability to cause adhesive scale. Water conditioner can be of two types: Chemical Water Conditioner and Magnetic Water Conditioner.
Magnetic water conditioner are however are more popular and effective and are used widely. In magnetic water conditioning system, permanent, high-strength magnets are used. These magnets are placed external to the pipe for the prevention of scale formation that may result out of industrial or domestic hard water. Magnetic water conditioner also removes s existing scale in heating and cooling equipment like heat exchangers and boilers which improves transfer of heat. It is an energy efficient method, that requires no maintenance.

Hard water crystallizes minerals which form deposits due to the temperature rise. The temperature rise promote the combination of opposite charges that is calcium (+) with carbonate (-) and magnesium (+) with sulphate (-). The use of strong magnet causes the breakage of water molecules that are aligned along the magnetic flux vector. The increased attraction between mineral ions and water molecules forms the compounds that are more smaller and do not adhere to the pipes or heating/cooling equipment. These particles flow downstream where existing scale deposits are hydrated and taken away by the flowing water. Whole process is called as Magneto Hydro Dynamics (MHD) or Ionization by Magnetic Induction (IMI).
Advantages
Following are the advantages of water conditioning system:
- Improves water taste and odor.
- Removes stains.
- Cost effective and energy efficient.
- Useful in industrial applications like cooling towers, condensers and chillers, steam boilers, heat exchangers etc.
