ISO Certification
For water quality there are two types of ISO certification
ISO/TC 147
Established in in1971, ISO TC/147, is responsible for standardization in the field of water quality which includes sampling of water, reporting and measurement of water characteristics, definition of various terms etc. Along with various countries U.N. agencies like World Health Organization (WHO) like also participate in its work. Till date nearly 229 standards have been developed by the organization which formed the basis for national legislation on water quality control. The benefits of the work is reaped by state authorities and regulatory bodies, industries consuming water for processing etc.
ISO/TC 224
ISO/TC 224 began in 2001 with the objectives of providing guidelines for service activities related to drinking water supply systems and wastewater sewage systems. Different countries regional and international organizations participates in its work.
NSF Water Treatment Standards
Apart from ISO standards there are other international standards that tests the water quality and water treatment. Some of the common NSF water treatment standards are:
NSF 40 : This standard is meant for residential wastewater treatment systems
NSF 41 : For saturated non-liquid treatment system
NSF 42 : Drinking water treatment units Aesthetic effects
NSF 44 : For water softeners, residential
NSF 46 : This evaluates wastewater treatment components and devices.
NSF 53 : Health effects of drinking water treatment units
NSF 55 : Microbiological water treatment based on ultraviolet systems
NSF 60 : Evaluates health effect of drinking water treatment chemicals
NSF 61 : Fixes standards for components of Drinking Water System
NSF/ANSI Standards
For evaluating drinking water treatment units, drinking water systems and drinking water additives, following NSF/ANSI standard is used:
Standards for Drinking water treatment plants and unitsNSF/ANSI 42
NSF/ANSI 44
NSF/ANSI 53
NSF/ANSI 55
NSF/ANSI 58
NSF/ANSI 62
NSF/ANSI 177
NSF/ANSI 222
Standards for Drinking Water System
NSF/ANSI 61
Standards for Drinking Water Additives
NSF/ANSI 60
Certification Agencies
The agencies that are accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to do testing and certification to the NSF/ANSI standards for drinking water treatment plants, units and systems, components of drinking water and additives of drinking water treatment are as follows:
- NSF International
- Underwriter Laboratories (UL)
- Water Quality Association (WQA)
- Canadian Standards Association
- Truesdail Laboratories, Inc.
- International Association of Plumbing Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) etc.
Gold seal certification or mark is provided by the Water Quality Associations. This certificate or programme certifies various water treatment units and components. The products are certified by WQA according to standards from the organizations like WQA, NSF/ANSI, IAPMO, ASTM.
Gold seal mark is recognized worldwide and symbolizes quality and integrity. The companies product bearing gold seal mark can create difference in the market and build the confidence in the mind of the buyer.
